Cyst & Lipoma Removal
Cysts and lipomas are both common benign growths that can develop beneath the skin. While they are usually harmless, they can sometimes cause discomfort, cosmetic concerns, or interfere with daily activities. If removal is desired or necessary, a healthcare professional, typically a dermatologist or a surgeon, can perform the procedure safely. Here's an overview of cyst and lipoma removal:
Cysts:
Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can form under the skin due to various factors, such as infection, clogged oil glands, or trauma. Some common types of cysts include epidermoid cysts and sebaceous cysts.
Cyst removal methods include:
- Incision and Drainage: A small incision is made in the cyst, and the fluid and debris inside are drained. However, cysts may recur after drainage.
- Excision: The entire cyst is surgically removed, including the cyst wall, to prevent recurrence.
- Laser Removal: For smaller cysts, a laser may be used to vaporize the contents and remove the cyst.
- Injection: Some cysts can be treated with injections of corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and shrink the cyst.
Lipomas:
Lipomas are noncancerous fatty tumors that develop under the skin. They are usually soft and moveable when touched. Lipomas can be found on various parts of the body and are generally harmless, but removal may be desired for cosmetic reasons or if they cause discomfort.
Lipoma removal methods include:
- Excision: The most common method involves making a small incision in the skin and surgically removing the lipoma and its surrounding capsule.
- Liposuction: For larger lipomas, liposuction may be used to suction out the fatty tissue through a tiny incision.
Both cyst and lipoma removal are typically performed on an outpatient basis and usually involve local anesthesia to numb the area being treated. After the procedure, proper wound care instructions will be provided to promote healing and reduce the risk of infection.
